speech normal thoughts Everyone he met would always say "My gosh, it must be so hard being blind! I can't imagine it!," but he would always shrug it off and move on. Being blind wasn't so strange for him; he lost his sight many years ago when he was a colt. He hardly even remembered being able to see out of his left eye. But he still had the right eye; he could still see, just not the best. His mother used to baby him, but it got worse after he lost his sight. She brought food and water to him and always kept him in sight, usually laying under the shade and protection of a tree. If she wasn't there to watch him, her sister would watch him. But unknown to his dam, her sister would let him play and be a horse. Ambrose never appreciated all the constant care his mother gave him. Sure, he loved her, but she was over over-protective. He never really made friends as a colt; when he turned thee years old, he left the herd as quickly as possible. Adjusting to being alone and blind was difficult for him. Although he hated the constant being of his mother, he missed it. He knew the basics of getting shelter and food and water, but he was still uneasy. He never had to fend for himself, but he pushed himself to adjust and deal with it. The painted stallion paused a moment from his walk and stared out across the field before him. There were trees everywhere, but there were also open, rolling meadows. It was beautiful, warm, and sunny, with a slight breeze to top it off. The sun was edging towards it's setting phase, but it was still bright and cheery out; plenty of time to stake out a place to stay before night sets in. Rosso had been traveling for a few days now, looking for other horses to stick around with. So far he had had no luck. "It's been so dead, lately." he thought, arching his neck as a breeze picked up his mane an inch. "Maybe I'll have more luck here," His good eye looked across the valley once more, then he took a deep breath in. There was a faint smell of equine, but it was old. Ambrose sighed, wondering if and when he'd find someone. He'd never felt more alone. It had been years since his herd was split up. His memory trailed back to the day of the tornado. The storm had started gathering early in the morning, and even though it was so bright, the skies were turning dark and green. He and his herd mates were feeling uneasy all night and morning, but the leader shrugged it off. Of course, disaster struck and Ambrose was separated from his friends, his family. The stallion let the air in his lungs seep out, then he turned and headed into the trees. Word count: 501 Tag: Ambrose for anyonee Notes: Let's get active again! :D

The small white mare moved silently through the field, her ears twitching at every little sound. Her light blue eyes held worry and mistrust, but she quickly moved her way on, trying to ignore how the silence frightened her. Espoir had kept herself away from society for long enough, enjoying the sweet relationship she and the stallion had in the Garden of Eve, but it wasn't what she needed. The little mare liked to wander and help others, not be captured to one place.
Maybe if she found someone she truly loved with all her heart and soul, there would be a day she settled down. Right now, Espoir really enjoyed having the sun warming her fur as she walked through the terrain. Just if it wasn't so awkwardly silent... when had the Willow Tree cease to be filled with hormonal creatures, with their wide, lovestruck eyes as their prince charming swept them up? Laughing softly to herself, the mare shook her head and continued, a slight sway in her step.
The next rustle she heard made her jump nearly out of her fur. Skittering to the side, the whites of her eyes glowed. Pinpointing the source, she felt embarrassed to see the tiny grey rabbit staring up at her with wide, frightened brown eyes. Muttering an apology, she broke into a trot, nostrils flared to scent any possible creature. And that's when she realized she wasn't the only life existing in the Willow Tree. A stallion. So she wasn't alone.
Blinking, she focused on the figure ahead, that she had so blindly failed to notice before. Slowly approaching it, scenting that it was a stallion, she let out a low, cautious whinny. "Hello there, sir," she called, her ears flicking forward to wait for a response. Her nervousness could have been smelled from a mile away; she always got antsy around stallions, after her father had brutally abused her and left a few nasty pink scars on her pretty white fur. A little sigh escaping her pink muzzle, she stood at least six feet away from the stallion, her head craned towards him, but her body defensively angled away. He looked generally nice, but she wasn't going to test her luck.
"My name is Espoir," she offered, a wary smile dancing on her lips, "It means Hope." She didn't bother to ask of his name, but just ducked her head respectfully, wondering if he was a kind boy.

speech normal thoughts
He was never a fast mover; his footsteps were always slow and graceful. He could move if he had to, but it was hard with only one good eye. Ambrose let out a low snort as his head slowly lowered to the ground. His ears flickered when he heard something approaching, and the scent told him it was a mare. Rosso lifted his head and swiveled around in the direction of the equine. He angled his head so he could see her and a hint of a smile played at the corner of his mouth. She was a cream colored mare with lovely blue eyes, like himself.
Ambrose's body relaxed and he nodded to the mare, giving a slight bow with his neck. He flicked his black tail across his hocks and watched her. "Hello there, sir," she had said to him. He hesitated for a moment, almost forgetting where his voice was. "Hello ma'am," he nickered back, nodding his head once more. She spoke her name, and explained what it meant to him; Rosso's smile grew a tad larger. "My name is Ambrose," he said softly, "It's nice to meet you, Espoir. It's nice to see another horse around. I can't remember the last time I saw one of our kind."
He trailed off and his eyes danced to the ground. He watched her hooves, then his eyes drifted back into her blue pair. She almost reminded him of his mother, just because of her coloring. His dam was a grey mare, and she would have been white by now. He always thought white horses were lovely; they just looked so pure and sweet. Ambrose turned his head away and looked out to the meadow outside the forest. He wondered why she was here and alone, but then it occurred to him that there probably weren't any horses around, so she'd most likely be alright alone.
Then he wondered why he was here. This is where horses usually came to find love; very few came here to find a home. He was honestly just looking for his old herd mates, and at the very least, a new home. But he was a bit lost and just went where smelt horses. Rosso mentally shrugged it off and turned back towards the mare. "Why are you here?" he asked, then quickly added in "By yourself, I mean." He flicked his ears and shook his mane, feeling embarrassed asking her such a question. It was really none of his business, but there's no crime against being curious.

The little white mare blessed the soft-spoken stallion with a careful, sweet little smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ambrose." Not used to speaking to other horses after her quiet life in the Garden, she blinked and watched him curiously, wide blue eyes wondering what he himself was doing out here alone. A small chuckle escaped her lips, and she shook her head regretfully. "The land has been quiet.. scoured over by the sun and wind to erase hoofprints. I wonder if a epidemic has shaken our little world, if that is why some horses have not bothered to reappear?" A look of wonder crossed her face, but she shook it off quickly. Scuffing the ground with a creamy hoof, she shrugged her shoulders lightly. "Maybe it's just quiet. Look at me, I haven't spoken to a horse in such a long time, and here I go, about to scare you off with my rambling!" Espoir smiled, but it came out more as a soft grimace.
Whenever the white mare looked into someone's eyes, she always wondered what they were thinking, and imagined it. Before she could make an effort to read his expression, he turned his head away, and she wondered if he had been frightened by her scars. They were long faded, not pink and stretched, but they stood out slightly. Greyish pink, she had tiny scars etched on her cheek, and some on her sides. It had been apart of her history, but she wasn't sure she'd be up to telling the kind stallion about it.
Of course, not like he'd be interested in hearing her life story. At this point, what was there to talk about? She was getting older by the second, and hadn't even met a stallion that would sweep her off her hooves and take her to the promise land. Musing over this, she had to wonder if Ambrose had one found a mare he loved dearly. Probably. Hadn't just about everyone? Or atleast, most of them had tried to. She had just been frightened out of her wits when she met a stallion at the willow tree. It was because of her father. Her stupid, arrogant, hurtful father.
At the stallion's question, she tilted her head and closed her eyes against the sun, feeling it's gentle rays upon her face. An answer formed on her lips, but she didn't speak for a moment. The silence was broken when she opened her pink muzzle, and quietly said, "I walked away from my old home. Everyone had left, but there had only been me and another stallion there at the time. I don't know what I'm doing, especially here, but I'm glad I'm not the only one here. I'd hate to be alone again." When her eyelids raised, her sparkling blue pools were filled with loss. "I wasn't even sure I'd find another horse to talk to here. There's not much out there to talk to anymore."
Frowning slightly, she turned to Ambrose. "And what are you doing here alone? You must be mighty lonely.." Her ears twitched, and she watched his eyes carefully, wonderingly. She wouldn't call herself a "medic" kind of horse, but she loved taking care of others. Was something bothering the stallion? There was a more distant look in one of his eyes, more than the other. Possible things flickered through her mind, but Espoir couldn't grab the one she thought fit.
Like a lightbulb flickered over her head, she grasped the idea boldly. "Are you blind?" she blurted out quickly, her blue eyes searching his own eyes. Shuffling with embarrassment, she stuttered an apology soon after that, "I didn't mean it so abruptly, sir, forgive me for being so nosy.." She flipped her creamy mane and stared at her hooves, feeling like if she could blush, she'd be redder than a cherry. She flickered her gaze up to him once, but fixated her eyes on a ladybug crawling slowly up a blade of grass. Her embarrassment almost gagged her, but she tried to sustain it by shuffling and flicking her ears about worriedly. "I really am sorry, Ambrose, I didn't mean to be blunt.."

Dusty was chewing on a seed that had dropped off the tree two horses talked in the distance she ran under the grass and squeaked, "Hello Horses It's been so long since I've seen Horses!" He squeal of happiness showed he contentness. she chewed on the shell of the seed thinking one of the horses was blind he didn't think of him as odd or strange he thought of him as unique. "I'm Dusty and you are?" Her little paws where held together and her little whiskers shook as she breathed in and out. Dusty turned and listened to bird chrip lightly he whiskers stood still she loved bird well not hawks that was a danger to her. She grabbed a piece of grass and nibbled on it. This horses looked interesting she should get to know them more. The Black and white Stallion was very interesting in his color. The white mare was beautiful. She hoped she didn't get stepped on. she giggled to herself.

Ambrose swallowed, watching the little mare intently. He felt himself take a step closer, as he watched her from his good eye. He didn't realize he moved right away, and felt worried that she'd notice and think he was advancing on her. He hoped she wouldn't, as he would never do such a thing, but what would she know? She didn't know him, she couldn't read his mind. Ambrose decided to move backwards again, hoping if she did notice he moved forward, she would also see him stepping back again. He hoped that would make him seem less like a stereotypical brute, that is, if he came off that way to her in the first place.
"The land has been quiet. It almost feels like there are no horses around at all, not just here. Maybe the population is moving somewhere else. Ha, that'd be a sight to see. I can't imagine horses not living here, they have for so long." He let out a soft chuckle and angled his neck down a bit lower. "Don't worry, Espoir, I feel your pain. I almost forgot what my voice sounded like because I haven't spoken aloud in what feels like forever." he laughed, glanced at the ground, then back up to her. "Well, you won't scare me off. I'm really glad we found each other. I felt like I would never see another soul again." He wanted to ask if they could stick together and travel together, but he thought it was too soon, they had just met.
A silence passed between them and he studied Espoir. She had little scars over her body and he wondered where they had come from. He wondered if she was attacked by something, as he couldn't believe a feeble little mare like her would take on something vicious. Well, she wasn't a thin little thing like some horses he's seen, but she was a smaller horse. He felt bad thinking over her like that, like he was insulting her. He apologized to her in his thoughts and smiled faintly to her. He wondered what to say, because the silence was getting to him, but he was usually at loss with words. Then she spoke up, causing his eyes to dart from the dirt to her beautiful sapphire eyes once more.
She had left her old home, just like he had when he turned three. His thoughts drifted back to that day. He remembered his mother begging him not to leave, telling him he'd die off on his own. "That eye will be the death of you, Ambrose!" she screamed. He remembered the tears, from both him and his mother; he didn't want to leave, but he had to. Something inside him told him he had to, and so he did. He said goodbye and he left. His mother didn't even chase after him. Ambrose blinked a few times, coming back to real times. Espoir asked him why he was here, alone, like he had asked her earlier.
"My herd," he paused, looking back at the ground and digging his fore hoof into the dirt. "The herd I was in was split up by a tornado. I don't know what happened to everyone. I came here because I could smell horses, but when I got closer, I realized all the smells were old. I figured I wouldn't find them here, but then hoped I would find somebody at least." He glanced at her, then back to the ground. Then she asked him a question that made him look up and stare. "Are you blind?" she asked.
"How did she know?" He blinked, staring, wondering. "Is it really that bad? I haven't looked at it in a while, but last I did, it looked normal.." Ambrose turned away from her, not wanting to admit it. He did feel ashamed, but didn't know why. Was it because she was a mare and he was a stallion? He had to be bigger than her, stronger, wasn't that the rules? Usually he wouldn't mind admitting he had a flaw, so why did it matter for him to tell her? Slowly, he turned back to her, but avoided her eyes. "I am," he mumbled softly, but he knew she couldn't hear him. He spoke up, louder than he intended. "Yes, I am blind." he barked, flicking his tail.
"Sorry, that sounded mean," he said after a few seconds of silence. He turned his body away from her so he was no longer facing straight at her, and angled his head slightly towards her. "It's just the one eye, I can see out of the other." he said shyly. "How did you know?" he asked, a different tone in his voice. It sounded sad. Of course it was sad. Sometimes being blind was a mood killer for him. It would happen to anyone.
Of course, a mouse appeared out of no where and killed the mood to their sweet confessions. Ambrose spooked a bit, not seeing the rodent because of his bad eye. His ears flicked back as he turned to face the little thing, who had politely asked their names. He stared at it with wide eyes and snorted. "I'm Ambrose," he grunted, lifting his head and turning back to Espoir, hoping she hadn't vanished. He felt bad about the way he acted towards the mouse, but he was talking with the mare, about something important to him. He sighed and looked at the ground.

Espoir had been frightened by stallions for a while, except for the time where one of the kinder ones touched her heart and made her feel love. That was such a long time ago, it seemed impossible for her to find another stallion with such a good mentality, but it seemed Ambrose had a sweet mind. Her ears flicked and she leaned back and he approached, quivering uncontrollably. The only time she recalled a stallion approaching her was her father, vicious and bloodthirsty, calling out her name with a leer.
She would not fall for any stallion's tricks. Immediately after, the white mare eyed him as he quickly moved back to where he had stood. Certainly he was a gentleman. And she felt bad for thinking that he was the worst, because he had already proved he was more of a kind soul than most of the ... well, she would say most of the horses here, but there were none to be seen.
"Horses moving..?" She echoed lightly, tilting her head curiously. The thought made her wonder if all the horses here would really try to leave, why would anyone abandon this lovely little place? It was free from pollution, and the wind blew tangled manes around and the sun shone down upon the ground. What more could a horse ask for? Espoir's attention was re-gained when she heard his chuckle, and something warmed her heart to hear such a sound. The sound of laughter, in a good way. She loved hearing other creatures being happy. The mare didn't know why, she just did.
Sheepishly, she grinned at him, flicking her tail. "I have to admit, I ended up talking to myself a lot. I don't bode well with loneliness." A little giggle escaped her pink mouth, and she ducked her head, a smile still on her face. "And it's a good thing I can't scare you off. I am a rather scary mare... you could say a night-mare!" She did her best impression of a growl, and then did a half-rear, flinging her head around and laughing. Shaking her creamy-white head, she said breathlessly, "Sorry, that was pretty unnecessary. I'm no nightmare though, I'm pretty much on the light side." Why she had to say that, she didn't know, but it sounded right to let him know she wasn't a dark and scary mare.
Her ears flickered forward as a small silence proceeded, and then Ambrose launched into his story of his past. Hers was nothing special. Abuse, hatred, what else would make it interesting? Too bad it was real, and it had happened to her. And just as a painful reminder, the pink scars that stretched over her. How awful. And she could almost feel his eyes - well, eye - on them, wondering if he really noticed them or if it was just her imagination. If he asked, she would tell him.
"Oh no, I'm so sorry.." Her blue eyes were wide with sorrow, and she shuffled her hooves. "I didn't really have a herd before this, I just lived with this stallion I thought could be the one.. but no. I'm the restless type." Hesitating for a moment, then moving briskly, she touched his cheek with her nose in a gesture of comfort. She meant no love, no sweetness in the touch, just a hastily shown movement of sympathy.
She pricked her ears as he mumbled something, and leaned forward, and was taken aback when he replied sharply. Flinching and looking away, she murmured loudly, "I'm sorry, Ambrose.. I really didn't mean to pry.. forgive me." Espoir opened her cobalt eyes wider, pity and sadness glistening brightly in their depths. A short silence followed, and then he spoke again. The softness that was now injected into his voice soothed her, and she relaxed again. "Don't worry about it, it was a really personal question. I shouldn't have asked.."
Espoir really felt bad for asking, but had been honestly curious. She didn't really know what had alerted her, it was just a few slight things. "The way you look around," she said softly, "was probably the biggest hint for me. I dunno. I didn't mean to upset you." Espoir stepped closer, the one making risky moves now, but only in a way to comfort the stallion. She touched his neck gently, and then nibbled at his withers, trying to provide comfort.
She moved quickly back afterwards, ducking her head and closing her eyes for a few brief moments. Her eyes widened as a mouse appeared, it's little body cute and fragile, but still terrifying. She moved backwards as quickly as possible and eyed it from a little distance. "Erm.. hello there. I'm Espoir." she sounded reluctant to talk to the being, and awkwardly turned her gaze back on Ambrose, shuffling a bit closer to him.

Ambrose cocked his head at the mare and smiled lightly. "Yeah, I think it's possible they might be moving.. Who knows, maybe the resources are becoming bad.. I'm not really sure, though." He turned his head to the side and looked off through the brush, imagining a mountainous horizon with the sun behind it. He longed for a home, someplace he would feel safe staying at, maybe surrounded by other horses. Maybe this mare would want to journey with him? It was a possibility, but she was probably just passing by and ran into him.
He looked back at her and smiled when she admitted she talked to herself sometimes. Couldn't agree with you more, he thought, noting how sometimes he talked to himself. Espoir reared up and made a little growling noise, which made him laugh a little. He stepped back and lifted his head, "Ooh, scary!" he laughed, grinning at her. "No, it was funny," he winked, "I'm on the light side, too, if that matters at all." Ambrose smiled to Espoir and flicked his tail.
His smile faded when she apologized to him about his past, but he nodded and told her it was fine. "It's just a thing of the past now.. Nothing you can really do about it. I miss them, but I've got to move on, and be happy for the times I spent with them." he looked off in the distance again, remembering his mother and his friends and his herd mates, blinking away a tear. He turned back to her when he heard her voice. Then she stepped forward and touched his cheek. Ambrose smiled and returned the gesture. "It's okay, life goes on, I say."
She seemed upset when he confirmed his blindness, but upset for prying, as she said. "No, it's fine. It doesn't bother me, I can still see out of the one eye. You were bound to find out in time, anyways." he gave a weak smile, trying to show he was confident and proud of his disability, but he really wasn't. It was a drag sometimes, but generally it didn't bother him. He nodded softly when she said she noticed from the way he looked around. He does have to flip his head around sometimes to see everything around him, and he guessed it was obvious.
"No, you didn't upset me. Don't worry about it," Again, the weak smile, but this time he turned away after flashing it, kicking his hooves in the dirt. Rosso cleared his throat and looked back up to Espoir, who moved a tad closer to him. "This may seem like a weird and sudden question, but do you want to," he paused, looking back down to the ground, then back up at her, "come travel with me?" He looked away again, embarrassed. "It's fine, if you don't. I mean, I just asked cause we're both alone.. I don't know if you were actually planning on meeting someone or going some where.." his voice trailed off and he turned back to Espoir and flashed a cheesy grin, turning his ears back in embarrassment.
