Silently, swiftly, and carefully, Black Gold picked his way through the unknown mountain. He had been here a day scouting out the land. He liked it alot. It proved to be fruitful enough, but he was sure the mountain could have a challenge. Just what he wanted, a challenge. His eyes roamed ahead. A dark shadow passed over the deer trail, and he turned toward it. It was just barely big enough for him to pass through. Stepping in he was surprised to see that a few feet past the tiny gap it opened up. It was gaping and rather large.
The size was perfect for a small herd. The build of the cave acted as an isulator. Much to hot in the day time but if the weather proved to be cold, it would be much to his advantage. Stepping back out into the light, he wondered a little further up into the mountain. Surely, it had a lot to offer. It would be a nice place to raise a family. The only thing he did not like was the angles and the thick brush.
Although it was a mountain, finding a way to watch over the herd at an even playing field was difficult. Also, when moving from one spot to the next to graze, scouting was impossible, and guarding on the thick shrubbed trail would prove difficult. He knew in his heart though that this was the place for him. Slowly evening began to set. He wanted this place. It was perfect.
He had caught old faint scents of horse`s but if they owned the area he was not sure. There was only one way to find out. Squaring his feet and pricking his auds, he let a challenging squeal settle across the land. That would surely get the attention of anyone willing to challenge him. He never let his guard down even when the sun faded away. He was shocked to see the moon was nowhere to be seen. Instead fireflies strobed around him. He liked that, it made hiding his black pelt so much easier. Another benefit for hiding from those who sought to kill him. It would also make it easy to sneak up on an intruder. The fireflies light the ground before him as he waited on what may approach.
